The second "Super Exciting Guide" databook came out in Japan recently, and like all the good databooks, it features a brand new interview with Toriyama. It's always great to hear new stuff from him, but the funniest part was inarguably the section where Toriyama talls us about Mr. Satan's TRUE name.

Credit goes to, as usual, Herms from Kanzetai. Here's the whole thread: http://db.schuby.org/daizex/viewtopic.php?t=10196&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Here's the coolest part.

quote:

Mister Satan’s name
Then he’s asked about Mister Satan’s real name. As Toriyama’s mentioned before, like in DragonBall Forever’s name pun guide, “Mister Satan” is just the character’s ring name. His real name is something different. So what is his real name? Well, according to Toriyama, it’s…

*drum roll*

*wait for it*

*wa~ait for it*

*brace yourself*

*more drum roll*

Mark.

No, really.

As Toriyama explains, this is a pun on akuma/devil, fitting his ring name. In Japanese, Mark is writtenマーク/maaku, and if you rearrange that, you get “akuma”. They don’t have family names in the region where Mister Satan lives, so his name is simply “Mark”. Toriyama adds that Videl is the character’s real name, not a ring name (“Videl” being “devil” rearranged a’course). There’s a picture of Mister Satan, with him asking people to please call him “Mister Satan”. Whatever you say Mark.

Oh man, I LOL'ed. I love it. Take that, Hercule.

I suggest everybody read he whole first post. You just can't beat how insightful it is.

Zah? Well looks like the secrets out. Doesn't it seem a little anticlimactic 16 years of wondering? Leave it to Toriyama to turn everything into a gag. He probably thought of this on the fly.

Lol, this is awesome. I want to bombard FUNi with emails to change the edited version of Mr. Satan's name to Mark instead of Hercule.

He's talking about the "Super Exciting Guides" that were released in Japan, and the source of the info that this thread is based on. There were two volumes: a story one and a character one.

And no, they have not been released in the states. They just came out in Japan within the past month.

Thanks a bunch.

[Referring to SEG #1: Story]

This might sound weird, but I always thought the reason why Toriyama gave Super Saiyans blonde hair and blue eyes was due to him having some sort of interest in Hitler's army. Hitlar's ideal canidate were people with blue eyes and blonde hair, and he thought that germans with those traits were the superior race. Plus Saiyans are a blood thirsty, power hungry race, which could be compared to Hitler's army. Seeing as how Saiyans are considered a superior race in the DB universe (and the fact they accumulate blonde hair/blue eyes when they transform), I thought it was to much of a coincidence for Toryiama to have just added those features for no apparent reason.

Anyways, sorry if I may have dragged your thread a bit off-topic, just felt like sharing that.

I don't like Daizex, they are too opinionated and refuse to acknowledge when they are wrong.
Example:
quote:

We use the title "There is no OVA!" mostly as an attraction to lure you all into reading its history, but we do also think of it as a true statement!

Toei Animation officialy lists it as an OVA. Because Daizex disregards this, I don't acknowledge them as a reliable source.

I can see the connection to Hitler, but a Super Saiyan has gold hair and green eyes, not blonde and blue. If that was an inspiration, it's a loose one.

As for the Daizex thing, at the risk of sounding mean, that's pretty silly. This review/translation was posted on their forums, not on the main site itself. It was translated and posted by an average person like you and me. Whatever feelings you have for the Daizex staff doesn't have any relevance in this situation at all.

Daizex is a Dragonball forum/website. The website has all kinds of information about the anime and manga, and the forum is just a community like this one where fans talk about the show. Also, there are official guidebooks for the DB manga/anime called the 'Daizenshuu' that were released in Japan. The first Daizenshuu is available in English.

Here's the URL if you want to visit: http://www.daizex.com/

Together with Kanzentai, pretty much every aspect of the series is covered in great detail.
