Case Closed was surprisingly mentioned at Anime Expo '09 today. Here's what was said.

13:22:44 <zalas|FUNi> Q: Case Closed, how did the names get changed?
13:23:00 <zalas|FUNi> A: show's name is changed, Conan the barbarian
13:23:26 <zalas|FUNi> A: name try to appeal to TV audience
13:23:59 <zalas|FUNi> A: character name changes because of broadcast
13:23:59 <zalas|FUNi> A: some channels only take stuff if you change names
13:24:18 <zalas|FUNi> Q: redub, back to original names?
13:24:19 <zalas|FUNi> A: more than likely

13:15:44 <zalas|FUNi> Q: anymore Case Closed?
13:15:51 <zalas|FUNi> A: end of our curernt contract, might be a big gap
13:15:57 <zalas|FUNi> A: but anything's possible

Nothing legit, but thought you might like to know. I have no clue what the heck that "redub" stuff is supposed to mean. We all know FUNi doesn't have the money for that. But whatever. I guess movie three and maybe 4-6 are all that are on the calendar at the moment.

At least they are talking about it, though.

Where are you seeing this stuff, MB?

So it's confirmed that they had to change the show's name because of Conan the Barbarian. How stupid. You can't copyright a name like that. Not that I really care, but I'm never sure what I should call the show.

The redub thing sounds... interesting, to say the least. I prefer the English names, but I'm used to them and if they used the Japanese names from the beginning I'm sure I would prefer those.

I'm actually optimistic. It sounds like they plan on continuing the series in the US (it might take awhile, but I can wait). Maybe they should try putting the series back on TV and see if it gets an audience this time. At the very least they should show it more often on their own TV channel.

So a redub is possible. And if that info is correct, they might get more CC but they'll be missing some episodes.

What?

I think that's referring to a gap in time, not in episodes.

that sounds...well decent. who knows mabye if movies 3-6 sale well enough will see a few more seasons. I wonder when they seaid re-dub they might have just meant going back & dubbing more of the sereis eventually. but this "Gap" Makes it sound like the earliest we would get newly dubbed material won't be for quite a while.

Well, here's the way I'm understanding it. FUNi isn't dropping the series officially, but they'll only dub some of it when they have some extra profits lying around. So basically, instead of trying to find an audience and increase sales, Conan has now become FUNi's "we'll dub it when we feel like it" series.

If this proves to be true, then Conan's just going to keep failing and failing. Regardless of how long or short a series is, you can't give it an indefinite schedule and expect people to stay interested. Sure, hardcore fans with internet access will stay informed, but the series needs the power of mainstream attention, which it can't get if it's getting a release "every once in a while."

Conan's no One Piece, it seems.

A redub would certainly be interesting. Not too excited about this gap but I guess I can use other anime to fill the void in the meantime. Hopefully they will do more with it in the future.

What?

Oh. If that's the case I really don't feel good about CC's future.

You can tell that this guy isn't a true fan of the series. Pitiful questions...

Huh? Possibility of a redub? Wh... what? I don't think the FUNi rep knows what he's talking about, lol.

I'm disgusted, Case Closed has been selling very rapidly, and yet, they still consider it a D- show. Umm, what's with this gap? I mean, they're releasing movies, right? Is this Q&A from the future?

I just might end up selling my DVD sets on eBay here soon. FUNi just keeps continuing to mock us, I guess I have no choice.

I think you're saying:

"FUNi's not dubbing more episodes, so therefore I must get rid of everything I currently own of my favorite series."

Forgive me, but I'm not following. You don't want to own any of it if you can't own all of it?

You're basically dead on. I'll probably rip about 10 episodes, but I just don't see the point in keeping them. If I do then It'll never stop bothering me, about how FUNi mistreats the series and not having a ending that is (when infact the ending comes). It's probably best I try to get rid of this habit now, so I'm not constantly nagged about it in the future. Iunno, maybe I'm crazy.

I think when they say redub they might be referring to dubbing the new redrawn episodes of conan, I would like blu-ray versions of episodes 1-whenever they stop redrawing the episodes.

Ugh, I wouldn't. I don't really think that's what they're saying, but I'd hate for that to happen. The new HD versions of the episodes are cut and censored similar to how Dragon Ball Kai was. FUNi's MUNi would be better used towards licensing more episodes and movies.

I agree but since they said the licensee is for the first 130 episodes, I think those episodes count as apart of that licensee as well, also that version is the only that has a chance at getting on TV in america right now unfortunately, plus if it is already toned down it will be easier for funi to get it on TV.

FUNi can just as easily censor the episodes they have themselves. Besides, I don't think something like the HD episodes is included in the deal. They have different openings/endings, they've been re-edited, and all that stuff. It's basically Detective Conan Kai. FUNi would have to pay for them all over again.

the only reason I can see FUNI redubing conan (though the first few seasons could use it) is if they had the rights to those "kai" type episodes. though I do know of a lot of people who would be interested in a conan redub.

Even if Funi doesn't get all of CC, I'm still keeping my episodes. I think the show is awesome and is worthy of keeping in my collection. Also, whenever CC is finished I'll just import the last few episodes to complete the collection.
