This thread is to discuss the comings and goings of anime clubs. This is a place to ask questions and get info on running your own club.

I guess Ill open up the questions by asking everyone what do you for showings outside of the monthly title from Operation Anime.

We have a boat load of different meetings!

Since we are ACK! (Anime and Cosplay Kelowna!) we are also a large group of costumers. Often we get together for meetings to complete our cosplays since some of us are good seamstresses and some of the younger members need help.  We have one to three themed photoshoots a month as well, always in nice colorful locations.  Here is our clubs Deviant Art page (thought I admit I lack in taking care of it...it's masively outdated) http://ackelowna.deviantart.com/

We also plan groups to go to anime conventions together. 12 of us recently went down to Anime Evolution, and now we're planning for Vcon and F3.

At the monthly screenings we always do some sort of dinner with it.  Whether it be a $5/per person dinner (usually something like pizza and then a separate meal for our vegetarians, then $2 goes towards the clubs treasury) or we do a pot luck and everyone decides what to bring.  Our screenings go for anywhere from four to seven hours.

We have weekly Lazer Tag meets because we also have a section of the club dedicated to "Nerds who want to get fit!" that we lovingly call "Active ACK!"  Lazer tag is MUCH more exercise than a lot of people realize.    We also have weekly hike or bike meetups.

We do fruit picnics for whatever fruit is currently in season.  We just had a Cherry picnic, and two weeks ago we had a Strawberry picnic.

For halloween we get together for HUGE dinners and go out to one of the best Japanese Restaurants in the city and rent out the back of the restaurant.  Right now we're planning a halloween dance that is open to anyone in the city.

I hold weekly art lessons at my house for any club members wanting to learn, but I only take 7 students at a time.

Aaaand if any big movies come out we usually do those too :D In costume of course :D

I did alot of word of mouth, talked about it to everyone I thought was interested... I picked up several members buying Manga at the local Waldenbooks. I also try to keep a presence on Myspace and a few local websites. If I had any indepentant Anime stores I would put flyers in them.. thats where I found out about the second club I was a member of a few years ago so I know it works.

If anyone is interested this is a little article I threw together about starting an anime club at Shohan. (you dont need to be a member to read it, but if you want to sign up we wont mind or bite ;)

Hi guys,

I'm Gabe the Organizer of the Indy Anime Underground. Since we are independently operated rather than tied down to a school, civic center, library, company etc we are able to do some things that other community based groups might not and that is serve as a hub between such groups. We work with out fellow anime clubs in the area. In fact I had more organizers of clubs join in my first few weeks than I did regular members. As such we did alot of planning meetings before hosting screenings. Deciding what it was we wanted our group to look like going forward and what we wanted to accomplish. How we would do screenings where would we host them etc.

We did lots of groundwork talking to anime friendly local stores. Everything from Borders and Waldenbooks to sushi resteraunts and other businesses owned and operated by local Japanese people or anime fans. This grew into somewhat of a network for promotion. We grew that using meetup.com, facebook, and local promotional websites. With meetup being our main hub because its full of people who actualy intend to show up to meetings.

As for what we do other than show movies and shows at our screenings. We've opened them up for cultural discussions using local resources. I think you'll find anime fans are great persuasive people, when your passionate about something its easier to achieve what you want. We got everything from a local professor talking to us about Japanese robotic science, to martial arts demonstrations, and now for October we are showing Ghost Hunt and looking for some paranormal researchers to speak beforehand or talk about the accuracy in the series after its shown. My philosophy is to take the anime experience into the real world and that way you grab more interest and you force your members who might normaly be shy and reserved in a dark theatre or classroom while watching to really open up and maybe even learn a thing or two. Its certainly worth a shot and its been a great deal of fun for us.

Greetings!

My name is Deb and I am a Teen Library Assistant at the Alhambra Civic Center Library. I am the Adviser for the library's anime club and am super stoked about it. I am actually looking for any suggestions or ideas that my club members woul enjoy rather than the usual screenings and chats. Some of the members has asked to incorporate a Manga discussions as well, but I want to take it a step further by providing additional programming like special guest speakers, Anime workshops, etc. The only drawback is I cannot provide transportation for my members to events (i.e., AnimeXpo) so I am looking for programs where they can meet at the library and talk all about Anime. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello.  I'm Echo, the Chairman for Avalon's Anime Seekers, a rural Anime Club located slightly north of Shelton, WA.

We currently have 21 members in our club, though not everyone attends every meeting and/or screening.  We developed our club via word-of-mouth, and now have our own website- which we developed in mind for ANY lover of anime with lots of anime info.  Our website is a constant work in progress, as we (as a club we have come up with different things we want to have on our website) come up with new and fun ideas for the websites.

At our meetings, which meet 2 times per month (location varies depending on expected attendence), we discuss new anime series or movies that any of us have discovered, talk about any new acquisitions made by the club as a whole or by individual members and add them to our club's library list.  Members are allowed to "check out" series and/or movies from the club's library.  Brainstorm ideas for the website and for club activities, etc.  We are very relaxed and just sit back and enjoy the fun of debate over what it a good series and/or movie- including anime movies turned live-action.

We have a wide range of members:  kids, teens, adults, and seniors.  Because of this range of difference in ages between the members, when considering screenings we have to either watch the rating level, or offer special screenings depending on age. Most of our members are low-income, and our community is small (with much unemployment due to current economy), so we don't charge dues.

The only requirements we have for our club is living in or in the vicinity of our club's location (the "Agate Area"), and that whatever anime they have be included in the club's library and be available for other members to view.  However, in order to protect the interest of the member's individual collections (heck, we ALL know how expensive Anime is) we have a form that it filled out and signed by the person "checking out" an item from the library so that if any damage or loss happens, they must replace or pay for the damaged or lost item.

I've invited in the past for my group a Taiko group to perform, a couple martial arts groups to demonstrate and had an art day where we had a couple people run some workshops and we had an "Iron Artist" contest for the rest of the afternoon.

Might check with the local universities for speakers as well.

Hello Echo! ^_^

I'm Sean Schotts, Kootenay Anime Bureau's Chief of Staff. We are situated in the Kootenay Region of British Columbia, Canada.

I've read your post about your club having 21 members, a website, and how you have a wide range of members that are kids, teens, adults, and seniors. I just wanted to let you know, your not alone. Our club also has a website, is made up of 16 members, and consists of people with various ages. We've also found it hard to charge dues because of the current economy.

We just had our first Annual Kootenay Anime Show this June, and because our club was so new, me and my girlfriend paid for the hall rental, sound equipment, awards that were given to Cosplay winners with the help of Pages Book Emporium, the projector for anime music videos, and for the food and drinks with help from MVP Studios. Between 30 and 50 people showed up to our event, and our admission was $2.00 per person. At the end of the night, half of what our club made went to the local food bank. The money that was left over went to buying stuff for our next fundraiser, which is a car wash for this next coming spring.

Running a club/non-profit organization can be very hard work, so don't feel like your the only one who has it hard. lol Keep at it, and never give up! All clubs fight for a good cause.

I wish you and your club luck! ^_^
